In 2003, 8.3 million cosmetic surgical and
non-surgical procedures were performed in the United
States, with non-surgical procedures representing
78% of this total.
The overall number of cosmetic treatments has
increased 293% since 1997 with non-surgical
procedures dramatically increasing 471%.
Such trends are an indication of how cosmetic
procedures are increasingly supporting the American
public’s strong desire to look younger and improve
their appearance.
Over 2.9 billion dollars were spent in 2003 on
non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
The top five procedures were Botox® injections,
laser hair removal, chemical peels,
microdermabrasi on and collagen injections. As the
demand for cosmetic medical
procedures increases,
the number of spas and facilities to meet this
demand currently is insufficient. According to the
International Medical Spa Association, less than 400
of the United State’s 6,000 spas are truly Medical
Spas.
